How We Research
Every guide on Cooking Old Skool starts with one question: will this product fit the way you bake and cook? For a mixer or baking tool, that means the recipes you make, the space you have and the equipment you already own.
Here is how we answer it.
1. We start with the job and the kitchen
A large stand mixer may be more than a small kitchen needs. A pasta attachment that does not fit your mixer is the wrong choice, even if it looks useful.
We consider batch size, counter and storage space, the kinds of dough or batter you make, and how often you plan to use the product. For pans, tools and accessories, we look at dimensions and how they fit your recipes and setup.
2. We compare specs and features
We check the details makers list, such as mixer capacity, power, speeds, bowl material, included attachments, dimensions and weight. For bread machines, pasta makers and food processors, we also compare programs or settings, available sizes, blades, rollers and included parts.
Makers describe their products in their own words, so we name the brand for every claim. We also note the warranty terms the maker lists and check compatibility details for attachments and replacement parts.
3. We look at buyer feedback
We read what buyers report after using a product. We look for patterns, such as a mixer struggling with dense dough, an attachment being hard to clean, a pan warping or a tool wearing out early.
One angry review doesn't sink a product. A pattern does.
4. We score each product
Our score weighs specs, features and buyer feedback against what you're shopping for. A mixer suited to frequent bread making may score lower in a guide for occasional cakes or a compact kitchen.
Scores spread out on purpose. A 10 is rare.
5. We keep pages up to date
Products change, and some disappear from stores. Makers sell close models under similar names, so we check each model name, included parts and compatibility, and we only link new units.
We skip unknown brands with no track record and any product with a known recall. When we update a guide, the "Updated on" date at the top changes with it.
What our picks are not
Our picks are research, not hands-on tests. We don't claim to have used every product we cover.
We aim to explain tradeoffs so you can choose equipment for your kitchen, recipes and budget. Check the maker's instructions for safe use, care and compatibility.
